AHEAD OF THE 2019 GENERAL ELECTIONS: THE LAGOS GUBERNATORIAL RACE: BY OPEYEMI ABDULLAHI

On the 2nd of March 2019, Lagos State “the Centre of Excellence”,as it has always lived up to the hype having become a major contributor to the internally generated revenue of the country asides the popular ‘oil money’ , decides who takes the wheel of moving the state forward.
For the first time since the re-inception of Nigeria’s democracy in 1999, an executive governor failed to clinch a return ticket. Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, following disagreements with major members of the All Progressive Congress failed to convince his party members and loyalists to trust him enough to continue at the reins of service.
The office of the governor of Lagos State will be contested by 65 Candidates but we will take a look at the four leading gubernatorial aspirants that seem confident enough to take over from the incumbent governor.
1. BARRISTER OWOLABI SALIS: The least popular of the four. The candidate of the Alliance for Democracy holds a BSc in Accounting from Ahmadu Bello University,Zaria and MSc in Accounting from the University of Lagos. Salis also studied law in the University of Lagos. He has practised Law, Accounting, Finance and General consulting for over 30years now and is currently a Jurist Doctor of New York. He unsuccessfully contested for the governorship primary election under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2007. His running mate is Madam Orelope Ogunji.
2. OLUJIMI KOLAWOLE AGBAJE: The 61year old CEO of JAYKAY Pharmaceutical And Chemical Company Limited studied Pharmacy at the University of Ife(now Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). Based on his Afenifere root,Jimi joined the Action Congress as his first Political party . In 2007, alongside 11 others, Jimi Agbaje left the Action Congress to the Democratic People’s Alliance following allegations that Bola Tinubu had annointed another candidate as his successor. Widely believed to have conducted the best campaign in 2007, Agbaje contested under the platform of the Democratic People’s Alliance but eventually lost to Babatunde Raji Fashola. Following the de-registration of DPA by INEC, Jimi Agbaje joined the People’s Democratic party and won the party’s governorship primary election but lost to Akinwunmi Ambode in 2015. In October 2018, he secured the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) ticket to run for the office of the governor of Lagos State having defeated Adedeji Doherty. Jimi will be running for a third consecutive time for the post and has picked female lawyer, Haleemat Busari as his running mate.
3. BABATUNDE GBADAMOSI: Gbadamosi studied law at Lagos State University. He is a real estate mogul , property developer and chairman of Redbricks Homes International Limited. He is the owner of Amen Estate in Ibeju Lekki. He got into the Political arena in 2011 and failed to clinch the PDP governorship ticket in 2011 and 2015. This is his third attempt and he will be contesting under the flag of the Action Democratic Party.
4. BABAJIDE OLUSOLA SANWO-OLU: The 53year old CEO of the Lagos State Property Development Commission (LSPDC) has a BSc and MBA in Surveying from the University of Lagos. The Candidate of the All Progressive Congress that clinched the governorship ticket and denied incumbent governor Akinwunmi Ambode, a re-election bid , was appointed Special Adviser to the deputy governor of Lagos State, Femi Pedro, in 2003. In 2007, Governor Fashola appointed him as the Commissioner for Establishments,Trainings and Pensions. Sanwo-Olu declared his intention to run for the office on 16th of September,2018 and having clinched the ticket with support en masse from the party faithfuls, has picked Dr Obafemi Hamzat as his running mate.
