Unemployed man rapes girl and runaway with her pant

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Friday remanded a 27-year-old unemployed man, Saliu Alowonle, in Kirikiri Prisons for allegedly robbing and raping a teenage girl at gunpoint.

The magistrate, Mrs Emeka Opara, ordered that Alowonle should be kept behind bars, pending the receipt of legal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPPs).

Opara adjourned the case until June 24 for mention as she refused to take the plea of the defendant.

Alowonle, who resides at No. 1, Olowolayemo St., Odogunyan in Ikorodu, Lagos State, is facing charges of armed robbery, conspiracy and rape.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Innocent Odugbo told the court that the defendant and two others currently at large committed the offences on April 7 at Odogunyan area of Ikorodu.

Odugbo said that the complaint, a teenage girl and her younger brother, were outside their compound at night, when the defendant and his gangs appeared and pointed a gun at them.

“The defendant and his accomplice led the complainant and her brother to a nearby bush; raped the girl at a gunpoint, collected her pant and her mobile phone valued at N23,000 and escaped.

“With the help of the vigilance group, the defendant was arrested while others are still at large,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offences contravene Sections 260, 296 and 297 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

Dog saves new born baby from death. See details

An attentive dog in northeastern Thailand is being hailed as a hero after finding and saving an infant allegedly buried in a field by his teenage mother, police said Saturday.

The newborn was lying under a layer of dirt near a farm in the Chumpuang district of Nakhon Ratchasima province but was found the same day — May 15 — by a curious canine named Ping Pong.

The dog dug around the area and began barking, alerting his owner a cattle herder, who went to the site.

“I don’t think it was long after his mother buried him before the dog found him,” case officer Panuvat Udkam told AFP.

He added that the boy was healthy, was recovering in hospital, and was so young he had not been named yet.

The teenage mother was charged with attempted murder and abandonment of children.

Officer Panuvat said the suspect was 15 years old and had tried to dispose of the child because she was afraid her parents would get angry.

“So after she delivered the baby by herself she buried it,” he said.

Local media coverage hailed the achievement and social media users praised Ping Pong’s good deed.

A dog is the “best friend” of human beings, a Facebook user commented on the page of media outlet Khaosod English.

The power grid reportedly collapsed on Wednesday and Thursday last week, worsening electricity supply in many parts of the country.

The Managing Director, TCN, Usman Mohammed, described the system collapse as the worst ever since he took over the leadership of the company.

The system operator put the nation’s installed generation capacity at 12,910.40MW; available capacity at 7,652.60MW; transmission wheeling capacity at 8,100MW; and the peak generation ever attained at 5,375MW

PRINCE HARRY AND MEGHAN MARKLE SHOW BABY TO THE WORLD.

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and The Duchess, Meghan have formally presented their new-born baby boy to the public.

The elated new parents said they were enjoying the “magic” of parenthood as they offered the world the first glimpse of their newborn son on Wednesday.

They, however, have not revealed the baby’s name. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Prince Harry had earlier noted that he and Meghan are still deliberating on a befitting name.

Speaking to the public as Prince Harry cradled their son, Meghan said, “It’s magic, it’s pretty amazing.

“I have the two best guys in the world so I’m really happy. He has the sweetest temperament, he’s really calm … he’s just been the dream,” she said.

“I don’t know where he gets that from,” Harry joked. “Parenting is amazing. But we’re just so thrilled to have our own bundle of joy and to spend precious time with him as he slowly, slowly starts to grow up,” he added.

Asked which family member the baby most resembles, the couple said they were still trying to figure that out.

“His looks are changing every single day. He’s already got a bit of facial hair!” Harry said.

The couple was due to introduce the baby to Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip later Wednesday.

The baby was born at 5:26 a.m. Monday, with Harry at his wife’s side. He weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces.

Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, spent time with the couple at their home after the birth.

On Monday, Harry told the press that he and Meghan were still mulling over the name.

“The baby’s a little bit overdue, so we’ve had a little bit of time to think about it, but that’s the next bit,” he added.

The newest member of the royal family is seventh in line to the throne, and Queen Elizabeth II’s eighth great-grandchild. He is not expected to have a royal title.

“I WAS OFFERED MONEY TO RIG ELECTIONS ” – INEC REP.

Garba Madami, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kwara State, has just revealed that he was offered some money to rig the election in the state.

According to Madami, some politicians offered him some money so he could rig the 2019 election in their favour.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin today, Madami said;

“There was pressure by politicians who offered me money to compromise the 2019 general election in Kwara State, but I stood my ground and refused to give in. The nature of our job at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is too tempting. It is left between you and God to do the right thing and keep your integrity, or compromise and lose your integrity. You may even go to jail” he said.

He continued saying;

“The politicians have money and some of them feel that they can buy anybody with the money. It is a matter of integrity; it is left for you to be careful and work transparently to keep your integrity.

“What I did in Kwara State before the elections was to go on air and tell the people that no amount of money can buy me. I made them understand that their votes would count and I was not ready to compromise” he said.

Recall the last election in the state saw the All Progressive Congress (APC) winning all the elections in Kwara. They cleared all 24 state House of Assembly seats and all three senatorial slots.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Bala Elkana, confirmed the arrest on Monday in a statement, saying that two suspects were arrested while attempting to collect a ransom.

Elkana said that at about 8:00 a.m. on Monday, acting on credible intelligence, the Divisional Police Officer, Igando Police Station, CSP Taiwo Kasumu, led his plain clothed surveillance men on the trail of the suspects.

He said the suspects had abducted the baby, one Esther Ojo, two years old, from the MFM Regional Headquarters at Agege on March 24, 2019 at 12:30 p.m.

“The kidnappers, one Nwaigbo Magnus and Sixtus Osunwoke Egwim, already demanded a ransom of an undisclosed amount from the parents of the baby and the church.

“The kidnappers continued to change the venue of the collection of the ransom within the Igando axis for over four hours, until they were rounded up by the police.

“Upon interrogation, the DPO followed up on available information and the baby was recovered from a hidden den and reunited with the parents, Mr and Mrs Jame Oladipo Ojo, and other well wishers, all crying for joy,” he said.

The image maker said the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Zubairu Muazu, directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate and charge the suspects to court. (NAN)

See full names of corrupt contractors in NIGERIA

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola SAN has8orwarded to Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP)
documents from some of the Ministry’s agencies providing some level of
details regarding the names of contractors that allegedly collected
money for electricity projects but failed to execute any projects, and
inviting SERAP to “inspect a compendium of verified and paid/outstanding
liabilities of contractors, kept at the offices of the Nigeria
Electricity Liability Management Limited/GTE.”

This development was disclosed today in a statement by SERAP deputy
director Kolawole Oluwadare.

The Ministry’s letter with reference number FMP/LU/R2K/2016/T/40 and
signed on Mr Fashola’s behalf by the Permanent Secretary (Power) Louis
O.N. Edozien, was sent to SERAP last week. The letter reveals that: “Pow
Technologies Limited, an Abuja based company, was in 2014 awarded a
contract for the supply and installation of test and maintenance
equipment relays, etc to various NAPTIN regional training centers (RTCs)
(LOT15), with the total contract sum of N87,763,302.40, out of which
N79,404,892.66 was paid to Pow Technologies Limited.”

According to the Ministry’s letter, although the contract was awarded in
2014, only 13 of the 19 items have so far been supplied, with 6 items
outstanding. The details of the 6 items that Pow Technologies Limited
has allegedly failed to supply are not provided by the Ministry but the
letter indicates some of the action the Ministry said it has taken to
ensure: “completion of the project, address criminal breach of contract
and take remedial action.”

The Ministry said that while the contractors undertook to take remedial
action, they have failed to complete the project for which funds have
been released. The Ministry pointed out that it submitted a petition to
the Commissioner of Police, Abuja on 13th January 2016, and that the
police instituted a case for the prosecution of Messrs Pow at the Upper
Area Court.

The Ministry also said it has sought and received legal advice to pursue
a civil action at the FCT High Court while a report of criminal breach
of contract has been made to the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC).

SERAP said: “We welcome Mr Fashola’s latest response and the information
regarding Pow Technologies Limited. But we need details of names of
other contractors that have collected public funds yet failed to execute
power projects. We will continue to push the Ministry and its agencies
to reveal more details of alleged corrupt contractors and companies, as
contained in our FOI request. We will continue to pursue our FOI suit at
the Federal High Court, Lagos, before Justice Chuka Austine Obiozor, a
Professor of Law, who has granted an order for leave in the case.”

Mr Fashola’s latest letter to SERAP reads in part: “I write with respect
to the Ministry’s letter regarding details of alleged corrupt
contractors and to forward the attached responses from some of the
Ministry’s Agencies namely: National Bulk Electricity Trading Plc;
National Power Training Institute of Nigeria and Nigeria Electricity
Liability Management Limited/GTE for your information.”

It would be recalled that Mr Fashola had earlier said in response to
SERAP’s FOI request that: “the Ministry has searched for the requested
information on details of alleged contractors and companies that
collected money for electricity projects and failed to executive any
projects, but we could not find it from our records.”

However, SERAP disagreed with the response, saying: “The public
expectation is that government information, when in the hands of any
public institutions and agencies, should be available to the public, as
prescribed by the FOI Act. The FOI Act should always be used as an
authority for disclosing information rather than withholding it.”

Mr Fashola in a follow-up letter dated 4th March, 2019, to SERAP’s
reaction promised to: “refer the request for details of alleged
contractors and companies that collected money for electricity projects
and failed to executive any projects to the Ministry’s agencies for
necessary action and appropriate response. There may be instances of
part-payment against certification of commensurate value for materials
and services in achieved contract milestone even though the entire
contract is not 100% performed.”

Mr Fashola’s initial response followed SERAP’s FOI request and suit
number FHC/L/CS/105/19 filed in February at the Federal High Court,
Lagos. The suit is seeking “an order of mandamus directing and/or
compelling Mr Fashola to provide specific details on the names and
whereabouts of the contractors who collected public funds meant for
electricity projects but disappeared with the money without executing
any projects.”
